# Root AGENTS.md adoption in GitHub's top 100 repositories

The Repo Agent Kit adoption snapshot measures whether an exact, case-sensitive `AGENTS.md` file exists at the root of the 100 most-starred public GitHub repositories returned by GitHub repository search on September 1, 2026.

## Snapshot result

- Sample: 100 public repositories, ordered by GitHub stars at collection time
- Root `AGENTS.md`: 39 repositories
- Adoption rate: 39%
- Median root-file length among adopters: 112 lines
- Testing, validation, or quality guidance signal: 29 of 39 files
- Scope, boundary, or explicit restriction signal: 32 of 39 files
- Bounded completion-guidance signal: 10 of 39 files

## Reproducibility

Every repository is pinned to the default-branch commit resolved during the snapshot. Positive rows link to the exact `AGENTS.md` file at that commit. The collector records repository metadata, the pinned commit, file size, line and heading counts, command-shaped line counts, and bounded structural signals. It does not publish the instruction-file contents or use model judgment.

## Limits

The snapshot checks only an exact root `AGENTS.md`; nested files do not count when the root file is absent. GitHub stars and the top-100 boundary change over time. Keyword matches show that guidance text is present, not that it is correct, complete, or followed. Popular repositories are not a representative sample of all software projects.
